- Indigo dye is made by chopping down the plant indigo then letting the indigo rot in a pond, next slaves drain the pond and put into another pond, then slaves beat the surface of the pond, all the particles sank to bottom of pond and the rest would be drained and fashioned into bricks which could be sold.
